  • TL;DR: In New Zealand, the world’s first live AI Cinema has had such a successful six week run—they’re doubling it and then some.

  • So what? Pack your jandals, prep your best selfies, and get ready to be the star of your own AI movie because we’re not in Hobbiton anymore, Toto.

Within a historic department store in Auckland’s central business district, in the North Island of Aotearoa New Zealand, a new development on the silver screen has invented a whole new genre of cinema.

HyperCinema, touted as the world’s first live AI cinematic experience, is the latest creation from Emmy nominated agency Gladeye and Dr. Miles Gregory, one of the creators of Australasia’s Pop-Up Globe theatre.

The premise of HyperCinema is unique. Rather than passively watching narratives, attendees are woven into them as the “Hero,” of the story, resulting in a tailor-made experience that shifts and evolves based on individual input. Dr. Gregory and his team aim to leverage AI's adaptive strengths to pioneer this personalised form of storytelling.

The HyperCinema Manifesto

In Gregory's "HyperCinema Manifesto," readers are introduced to a new entertainment format that is poised to reshape the landscape of live and digital experiences. At its core, HyperCinema is neither cinema nor theatre but rather a "new live/digital art form," that merges the capabilities of advanced AI with the essence of storytelling. Gregory states that HyperCinema's narrative capacity outpaces traditional storytelling, even likening its vastness to overshadowing Shakespeare's expansive works. Concluding his manifesto, Gregory expresses hope that HyperCinema serves as a beacon for both artists and audiences, charting an extraordinary, AI-empowered journey into the future of entertainment. As he aptly quotes, "Who knows what the future holds?"

What to expect at HyperCinema Auckland

Visitors to HyperCinema are in for a uniquely immersive experience that seamlessly fuses the digital with the tangible. Upon arrival, attendees, referred to as "Heroes", are scanned to create a digital "twin" of themselves. Accompanied by up to two "Companions", they engage in an interactive survey dubbed the "Game", capturing their reactions to a variety of questions. This data then fuels the AI-driven "hyperfilm" narratives they embark upon within HyperCinema's theatre. The debut hyperfilm, ‘Enter The Multiverse’, offers a 45-minute odyssey where attendees journey through ever-evolving narratives set in diverse realities.

From cinematic films to digital portraits, participants witness alternate versions of themselves, such as film stars or heroes from various epochs and realities. Significantly, each narrative is not only tailor-made for the individual but is also one-of-a-kind. The unpredictability of AI ensures no two experiences are the same, making every visit to HyperCinema a novel and unrepeatable adventure.
